Underground Railroad

Experience the home of Brooklyn's abolitionist movement by joining us at 227 Abolitionist Place. Walk with us along the very same path of our ancestors. Tours of the Underground Railroad are available for all including schools, churches, senior citizens, and any other interested party.
Museum

Home to many authentic artifacts, the museum, which is conveniently located at the beginning of the tour, is a staggering step back in time. From period pieces such as curling irons and original documents to more sinister reminders of the past such as shackles, our museum is not to be missed. See the actual tunnel and door used in the movement firsthand.
    Vision Statement

The creation of a society that all people are properly educated about the history of African people in America.

    Mission Statement

Friends of 227 Abolition Place Museum and Cultural Arts Center is Brooklyn’s only underground railroad museum dedicated to the preservation of abolitionist history, and its artifacts. Celebrating the diversity within the urban center of downtown Brooklyn, we present national and international culture and tradition in relation to the struggles and triumphs against slavery through a variety of educational and arts programs including: museum exhibits, educational interactive tours of the underground railroad, scholar lecture/demonstrations, cultural enrichment classes for children and adults, children’s summer camps, performances, and audio/media production.

History

Our Vision for the Future
227 Duffield Street has major potential to become an important attraction, thus contributing to the vibrant economy for the community. It is a site that served as a safe haven made possible by abolitionist who made tremendous sacrifices for enslaved people of African decent, women, and indentured servants. 227 continues to be that safe haven for all who believe in justice, equality, and dignity. More importantly, we can share the history of the brave people who believed in freedom at the time when our country went astray. This is not only good for Brooklyn— this is good for the United States.
